Inspirational Sayings

April 28th, 2009

What are inspirational sayings?

They are one or two sentences that have a powerful message and really make you think. You may only have to think for a few seconds to understand the message, or you may have to think longer and maybe talk about the saying with friends. When you do begin to understand the message you usually think, “Yeah, that’s really true!”

Think of an inspirational saying that you find meaning in. It may be one your parents have taught you and repeated your whole life. Or it may be one that is taught to all of the children of your culture as they grow. If you have one in your first language, that’s great! Translate it the best you can so that we can understand it. Then write about what you think it means. We can share some of our favorite sayings and comment on one another’s. We can inspire each other!

So, first write/translate your inspirational saying in English.

Next, write what you feel it means to you.

Then, read and comment on other sayings.

Let’s broaden our minds and do some deep thinking!!!

I love the saying that is called The Golden Rule. It is “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” The Golden Rule is what my mom told me over and over again as I was growing up. When I became a teacher my mom gave me a plaque with The Golden Rule on it to hang in my classroom so that all of my students could also read and follow it.
To me the message is that we should always speak, act and treat others the same way that we want them to treat us.
And we all want to be treated kindly and with respect.

Then, one day as I was searching for other inspirational sayings on the web, I found this one, which takes The Golden Rule just a little bit further.
“We have committed The Golden Rule to memory. Let us now commit it to life”. (By Edwin Markham)
I think this means that we all can say what The Golden Rule is, but that sometimes we don’t really follow that rule. And that to make a difference in our lives and in the lives of others we should promise ourselves and really work hard at always being kind, caring and compassionate to others.

I like the saying that means, if you are nice to people the good luck will come to you. My mom tells me about it over and over, so this is the most familiar inspirational saying to me and I like this saying the most. This saying means to me that be nice to people is good for others but it is also good for you because by making people happy you will feel happy too and plus that the good luck will come to you. My mom also tells me that the way you become happy is to make others happy. I really like this saying because it is really true. I wish other people will like it too!

    Hi Ms. Mongno,

My mom always told me “Du kan alt” (You can do anything)

To me the message is keep trying, believing in yourself, you can do anything, don’t give up, and trust yourself. I think everyone have said “I can’t do it” and then your parents have said “Yes you can”

I think this saying is important because you always have to believe in yourself, you always have to try and do your best. You can’t say “I can’t do it” before you have tried. You have to think positive meaning “I can!” Instead of saying “I can’t”(negative).

The sentence my always use to tell me is “ kasha ysh rak blhem vgam aoto aohlim” and that means hard there is only in the bread but you eat that too. And when I think of it means even if something is hard you can do i.e. think my mom and dad told me that because when I was little I always use to say that I am not going to be able to do it, and now when ever I cant do something I think of that sentence and I know I can.

My other sentence is “al tistacel bakankan ala bema sheyesh bo” and that means don’t look how beautiful something is, look how helpful it is for you. When I think of this sentence and I don’t like something so I look at it not from the bad side I look at it from the helpful side.

    Howdy Ms.Mongno,
This is what my mom always says to me…
“Try your best in everything you do, keep patient, not to lose your target until you achieve it.”
To me the message kept me on trying and being patient in everything we do. Also not to lose your target until you achieve or understand it. Sometimes when I tried my best and I didn’t quite get it, my mom helps me explaining it.
This is my favorite inspiration from my old school…
“Be the best that you can be & Do the best that you can do.” This message from my old school always kept me on my target and be/do the best you can. “At least try your best,” this is what the head teacher said every time/day.

    Hi, Mrs.Mongno!

    My mom always said, “失敗は成功のもと.”
The meaning is that “Failing is a way of succesing.”
This means to me that even though you failed, you don’t feel bad adout it, just try again then you will success.
This saying always gives me hope because it makes me fell that once you fail that is not the end of every thing. I think this saying is very important to me because, I always try to success by failing. I hope I could learn a lot from this saying.

It is so exciting to read these inspirational sayings and to learn about important teachings from other countries and cultures. I think that many inspirational sayings are written to teach us to be better people. Doesn’t it seem that many of the sayings are the same, no matter what language?

Ayu, the inspirational saying your mom taught you sounds very much like the one I found on a Japanese famous quotations webpage. It is “Fall down seven times, get up eight.” It reminds me of the saying my mom taught me, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”

Angie, Maya and Malou, I love your sayings about working hard, keeping your target in your mind and heart, and knowing you can succeed. They are so true, aren’t they?

Mio, yours about finding happiness by making others happy is so true. I hope we can all be inspired to do what your mom has taught you.

“팥 심으면 팥나고 콩 심으면 콩난다”( If you plant red bean red bean will come out and if bean is planted bean will come out.) It means that if you do your best you will get a good result and if you don’t you won’t really get a good result. This inspirational saying is from Korea. I think this is going to help me in the future because then I will get good result and get a new life.

塵も積もれば山となる is the inspirational saying in Japanese. In English, it means An inch in an hour is a foot in a day’s work so if you work really hard even though a little by little, at the end it will be like a mountain. And my mom always says 塵も積もれば山となる.

    Hello, Mrs. Mongno

My inspirational saying 티끌 모아 태산 this means in English you collect small thing and it will turn into a big thing. This is really helpful inspirational saying because it gave me a small hope that is even small thing.

  11.   Angie on May 7, 2009 10:42 pm

    Howdy Ms.Mongno,
This is what my mom always says to me…
“Try your best in everything you do, keep patient, not to lose your target until you achieve it.” In Thai it says, “ทำอะไรต้องตั่งใจในสิ่งที่ตัวเองทำ ไม่ใช้ทำ ทำไปเสร็จเป่าหมายก็หาย ต้องทำจนกว่าจะได้สิ่งที่ตัวเองทำหรือได้ไว้ และอดทด”
To me the message kept me on trying and being patient in everything we do. Also not to lose your target until you achieve or understand it. Sometimes when I tried my best and I didn’t quite get it, my mom helps me explaining it.
This is my favorite inspiration from my old school…
“Be the best that you can be & Do the best that you can do.” In Thai, “ทำอะไรต้องทำให้ดีที่สุด และ เป็นตัวของตัวเองให้ดีที่สุดเท่าที่ทำได้”
This message from my old school always kept me on my target and be/do the best you can. “At least try your best,” this is what the head teacher said every time/day.

    “別放棄,你會得到你想要的”
“Don’t give up, you’ll get what you want”
I heard someone told me before.
It means if you get something is challenge or hard to you, don’t just give up, keep trying, then you’ll get what you want to get.
I think this inpirational saying will help me to the middle school, because middle school is harder than ES, so I will use this sentence to challenge myself, I think I will get good grade in the middle school.

My inspiration is “엎어진 물 다시 주워 담을 수 없다.” (You can’t put water back in to cup, if you spilled, already. It means, if you made a mistake, don’t think about it, just do something else best you can. Also it means, first mistake is a good experiment for your life but second same mistake from first mistake is a sin. So it makes me think, if I go to middle school, I should remind my inspiration in my heart and I should not make same mistake like in elementary school and also when I go to middle school, I should not hang on something that I made mistake, just do something else, best I can. And if I really keep this in my mind, later on, I shouldn’t make any mistake. Because if I made many mistakes, already. There are no new mistakes.

My inspirational saying is ‘Tell yourself, “I may not be perfect, but I’m okay just the way I am.”’ And in Japanese, 自分はパーフェクトじゃないかもしれないけど、自分は自分のままで良いと自分に言い聞かせろ。 It might not be exactly the same, but I think it is okay. And please forgive me about it Ms. M. I think this inspirational saying means that you can try your best for something, but if it wasn’t perfect, it is okay just the way you did/are. When I got a lot of homework, I always think that I have to be perfect, but when I read this saying, it made me change my mind.
For Ayu’s inspirational saying, sometimes my mom and dad say to me, too. I think that saying is great.

    Hi Ms. Mongno!
    My inspirational saying is
    “발 없는 말 천리 간다.”

Which means that the word that doesn’t have feet
    goes 1000km.
Well, so it actually means that the word you said
    can go anywhere.

Hi everyone! my inspirational saying is “Believe in your self and
don’t give up!” To me it means that if you try you can do stuff that you believe that you can do no matter how hard it is. For example one time my teacher gave me homework. I told my mom that it’s too hard for me and she told me to try again until i get it right and don’t give up!
Ayu’s inspirational saying might help me because it might help me with my grades.“Failing is a way of succeeding.” For example, if i get bad grades and fail I could try again and succeed! :)

Hi Ms. Mongno and everybody in her class! My name is Mr. Hamada and I’m a teacher at the United Nations International School in Hanoi. I came across your class blog because of a message I got from Ms. Cofino.

I’ve enjoyed reading your inspirational sayings and I thought I would share one of my own favorites with you. It was originally written by a Chinese philosophers thousands of years ago:

A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.

What this means to me is, no matter how big or scary something might seem, you must always begin by doing something small first.

This is true of anything in life: a really hard math problem (I’m a math teacher!), a story you have to write, or even getting ready to move to middle school next year. All of those little steps will someday add up to a big journey!
