Sharing Our Nonfiction Learning!
November 24th, 2008
We have been reading nonfiction books and discovering all sorts of information that we never knew before. After noting on post-its and then sorting our post-its to help organize our thoughts we then reflect on the information we feel is most important and that we want to hold onto, to take from the books with us.
Think about one or several of the nonfiction books you have read on a topic.
What learning have you held onto? What information will you take with you stored in your brain? What would you want to share with others? What questions do you still have about the topic?
Share your learning in a reflection post so that the rest of us can learn too!

I was amazed while reading the book “Unusual Spiders” by Ned Jensen to find that there are more than 30,000 different kinds of spiders on our planet!
Not only that, I learned that if there were no spiders, then the insects would eat most of the plants in the world and there would not be enough food for humans and other animals. Spiders actually help humans and other animals by controlling the insect population.
I think that we should be thankful for spiders, and not so afraid of them!
Why are so many people afraid of spiders?
Dear Ms M,
I was amazed while I was reading a book called “Is There Life in Outer Space?” by Isaac Asimov. For the information, I just knew that Mars have been a living planet, but now they were wasteland with no water. Also now the Scientists guess that our earth can live for 60-70 years until it dries. I want to share that a few years ago Scientists thought that moon have live and creature that looks like human but can fly.
I’ve 5 questions about this book, that…….
1.) Is there really, really, really going to be a planet like our earth?
2.) How can Scientist really know that Earth and Jupiter are twins?
3.) Is there’re life in Mars, if yes, are we going to move to there?
4.) How our world cans didn’t fall off the system (where the planets are all line up)?
5.) If we stop global warming, can this earth stay more longer?
Wow Angie, what wonderful questions! They really make us think!
What the scientists are finding out about Mars is fascinating. I think that perhaps, in the near future, there will be an exploratory colony built on Mars to see if humans can live there. Humans are already exploring the Solar System in space shuttles and with giant telescopes that send pictures back to the earth.
What do you think? Will humans live on Mars in the future?
I was amazed while reading a book called `Bulldogs` by Julie A.I found out that, Bulldogs have a scary face but they are acutally very friendly. Most people think they are ugly dogs that look wierd.I was also amazed in this information that bulldogs where worried that they might extinct in the 1,800s! But people who loved bulldogs from exincting. My question to the author is- How did bulldogs get nearly exctincted?
Dear Miss Mongno,
I am readind a book called “I wonder Why The Dodo Is Dead”, in this book I learn that
– they are 1,400,000 kinds of creepy crawly in this world!
- The Rodrigues flying fox is not a fox at all, it is a bat!
- in sixy-five years ago the golden hamster was nearly extinct. Then one female and her 12 young were caught and allowed to breed in safely. Soon there were million of them!
-the elephant bird eggs were 200 time bigger than a chicken egg!It died out about 300 years ago.
And my question about this book is that
-could they be any dinorsaur in the center of the earth?
like in the movie called “The jurney to the center of the earth.”
I read same book as Mrs. M call “Unusual Spiders” by Ned Jensen. I amazed too, that there are more than 30,000 types of spiders. I didn’t like spiders, but when I read first page, I thought I can’t think that way. Because the book said that the spider eats insects and if there is no spiders, there wouldn’t be enough food for us to eat. If spider doesn’t eat insects, insects will eat most of the plants. I also amazed that tarantulas are very peaceful spiders. Some people keep it for their pets!
The book says the female can live 35 years but can male live more or less than35 years? I have one more question. The book says that spider eats insects but is it ONLY an insect?
I still have two questions, but I learned many things from this book.
I think I shouldn’t be afraid of them anymore.
I was amazed when I was reading book called “Tsunamis”. On December 26, 2004 in Thailand there was a big tsunami that killed 300,000 people!
Earthquakes cause most tsunamis.Earthquakes happens when the plate moves.
Tsunami can destroy eveyything along the coastline. Boats, cars, and buildings near the shore are instarly smashed by the wall of water.
Tsunami is a series of a big wave. In Japanese, tsunami means, “harbor wave”.
I still wonder “Where does tsunami hits most time?”
Hi Miss. Mongno
I really enjoyed reading this book called,”What on earth is an echidna?” by Jenny Tesar. When I started reading this book I wondered what an echidna really was. When I read on I figured out that an echidna was a kind of animal that looks like a porcupine. Not only that, I also learned that when echidnas are born they are only 12 millimeters long.
My question is how can you see the difference between a female and a male echidna?
Hello, Ms.Mongno
I was really enjoyed the book name “The Beaver”,I don’t know who is the author, but this is a good book, because now I know a lot of things about beavers!.
The beavers are the amazing creatures, because the beavers can make the lodges and the dams, and they are the small animal!
They always live at their lodges, and the lodges are on the ponds.
Before I read the beaver book, I have a lot of question about the beaver, but I found the answer at my beaver book.
I still have some question about the beavers.
-Why I can not usually find the beavers?
-Are they will disappear?
-Why the beavers don’t like live together with the other beavers.(like penguin)
-Why their food are the twigs?(the hard food)
Hello, Mrs.Mongno
I read different kind of the big cats. I learn lots about them. Why the cheetahs are are fast? Who is top of the prides in the lions? Why are Bengal tigers in dangers? Why the stripes are is in skins? Cheetahs body spring out itself and it paws doesn’t retract so it grip the ground. On lions pride the male lion is top of pride when it lost it strength the young male lion will replace it spot. The Bengal tiger are hunt by a bones and skin. The tiger stripes are fingerprint, the tiger don’t have same pattern of stripes. I read cheetahs weight 130lbs to run fast but on jaguars are 120lbs to 200lbs there less are 120lbs its less then cheetahs weight why?
Hi Ms M,
The question you have ask me makes me guess that yes, or maybe not because in mars now that are wasteland(no water).
Hi,
I want to talk about the book “Skunks’. I think about this book because in this book I learned so many new things about skunks. Like :
• When they are mad or scared they are really smelly and when that happens you really don’t want to be beside them.
• They are walking always in slow motion accept of the time they are in danger, and at that time they can run short distance really fast and they can tern around really fast too.
• When they born they weight from 3 pounds to 11 pounds.
But I still have a question, how do they hide from their enemy?
I learned so many thing while reading a book call,”The voyages of Columbus” by Ken Hills.I was so amazed when I found out that, Columbus had four voyages in his life. Columbus was born in port of Genoa, Italy and he was a oldest son in his family. I think the most fantastic fact is that, Columbus was inspired by Marco Polo with his plan for sailing.I learned lot from here, but I still wonder why columbus didn`t went to school, but he is so smart for planing all sorts of thing.
Hi! Ms. Johanesen and Ms.Mongno!!!!!
I read a book about a cat and the title is ‘CATS’.
And I learned many things about a cat.
For example, cat needs scratch board because they have sharp claw
and they like to scratch something.
Another example is you can’t use people shampoo for cat because
cat’s skin is very thin and it make cat itch so if they scratch their skin
turn with red and their fur can be fell off.
Also they can controll their eyes to small and big.
And I also have questions
-How they control their eyes to small and big?
- Why they want to scratch something?
I could not make many friends this semester so I think I should try to make many friends this year so my goal for this year is to learn English, because if I could speak English, I could talk with many another country people. My second goal for next semester is to learn math, because half year was already passed and I`ll go to middle school when 7 months pass and learn difficult mathematics. In this semester it was hard for me to talk with classmate so my best goal is to learn English.
I was interested at book called “Cats ”
“Cats” was about how to take care of pet cats.
I have three questions :
1. How many breeds are there?(I mean cats.)
2. Why cats are eating their fur?
3. Why cats are trying to go out of their house?
And I want to share about information that I learned in cats book.
I was surprised that when I had a topic about space. There were lots of things. Also when people founded pluto, they thought it wasn’t a planet. Also a meteor start with a small little pieces of rock. They are like pebbles. it was so cool. Also the planet Mars was named after the god wars and they named it God of wars.
